Flying Facts
Turbulence. Flying through turbulent air is much the same as steering a powerboat across choppy water. In a boat, passengers expect the thud-thud-thud of the water hitting the bottom of the boat. Just as boats are strong enough to survive the impact of turbulent water, aeroplanes are built to withstand turbulent air.

PRESS RELEASE - APRIL 2005

THE GLEN STEWART FLYING SCHOLARSHIPS 2005/2006

Registered charity number 1108878

The Glen Stewart Flying Scholarships Trust announces its Scholarship Awards programme for 2005/06.

This provides a unique opportunity for people who would like to become pilots or help towards completion of PPL training already commenced.

The Scholarships' aims are straightforward - to help those wishing to pursue flying with no strings attached.

Getting started on flight training is a challenge in itself - not least because of the financial costs.   The Glen Stewart Flying Scholarships Trust has a particular interest in helping those people for whom the financial burden might otherwise hinder their ambitions.

The Scholarship for 2005/06 is a JAA Private Pilot License (Airplane) course.

The criteria for successful applications include:

The ability to demonstrate a serious ambition and ability to learn to fly.

The availability to undertake and seriously commit to completion of training by 21st July 2006.

Your educational achievements, demonstrable knowledge and/or experience in science, mathematics or other aviation related subjects.

You must be able to satisfy the relevant JAA Class 2 medical standard to enable grant of the appropriate license and any relevant JAA pre course entry requirements.

You must be between 15 and 20 on the 21st July 2005 and training must commence on or before 1st September 2005.

Applications must be received by 30 June 2005 on the Glen Stewart Flying Scholarships Application form available from the website www.flyingscholarships.co.uk or by written request enclosing an A4 size stamped and self-addressed envelope to:

Mr N Thornhill,

The Glen Stewart Flying Scholarships,

Flying Facts
Engine Failure. So what happens when all engines go out on a jet aeroplane in mid-air? It glides. Most commercial jet aircraft have approximately a 15-to-1 glide ratio (gliding 15 feet for each foot it descends). That is, an airplane flying at 35,000 feet can glide about 525,000 feet (or 100 miles).
